Credit notes
Correct a finalised invoice with a credit note. Credit all or part of it, credit an invoice made outside EenFactuurMaken.nl, numbering and VAT.
You can't change a finalised invoice. Is something wrong, or is your customer getting money back? Then you create a credit note: a "minus invoice" that reverses (part of) the original invoice.
Creating a credit note
- Open the invoice you want to credit.
- Choose Create credit note (under More actions, or in the menu in the list).
- You get a draft credit note with the same customer, lines, VAT treatment, currency and language. By default you credit the whole invoice.
- Only crediting part of it? Adjust the lines: remove lines or lower quantities or prices.
- Finalise the credit note. It gets a number from your credit note series, for example C2026-0001.
- Send it to your customer, just like an invoice.
Credit notes are always free
Credit notes never count towards your 5 free invoices a month. You should always be able to make a correction.
Amounts
You enter amounts on a credit note as positive numbers, just like on a normal invoice. On the credit note, in your VAT overview and in the export they count as negative. So if you credit €200, you enter €200 and the PDF shows −€200.
What's on the credit note?
- the title Credit note and its own number;
- a reference to the original invoice (number and date), as the law requires;
- the same VAT treatment and legal statements as the original invoice;
- no payment QR code.
The e-invoice for a credit note is a UBL CreditNote that refers to the original invoice.
Crediting an invoice made outside EenFactuurMaken.nl
Need to credit an invoice you made in another program? Open a new credit note and fill in that invoice's details under Original invoice number and Original invoice date. Without a number you can't finalise the credit note (creditNoteReferenceRequired).
Through the API, pass creditedInvoiceNumber and creditedInvoiceDate to POST /api/v1/invoices with kind: "credit_note".
Rules
- You don't credit a draft: edit it or delete it.
- You can't credit a cancelled invoice or a credit note (
invoice_not_creditable). - There can only be one draft credit note per invoice at a time (
credit_note_draft_exists). Finish or delete that one first. - An invoice that's already fully credited can't be credited again (
invoice_fully_credited). - You can credit an invoice in several steps, with several credit notes. If you credit more than the original, you get a warning.
- Once an invoice has a credit note, you can no longer cancel it.
What happens to the original invoice?
- The invoice shows Credited by and the credit notes.
- Reminders only cover the amount that's still outstanding after the credit notes. A fully credited invoice gets no more reminders.
- Does your customer no longer owe anything? You can mark the invoice as paid, so it no longer counts as outstanding.
- On the Free plan we keep the original invoice at least as long as the credit note.
Invoicing again
Need a new, correct invoice? Duplicate the original invoice, adjust it and finalise it. It gets a new number.
