E-invoicing

E-invoicing, without the jargon

An e-invoice isn't a PDF but a structured file that software can read directly. With EenFactuurMaken.nl you get one with every invoice, on every plan.

A quick explainer

What is an e-invoice?

A PDF is for people. An e-invoice is for software: your customer or accountant imports it without retyping anything. That saves time and mistakes.

Example of an invoice made with EenFactuurMaken.nl: invoice 2026-0042 from Studio Zonnebloem to Bakkerij De Vries, € 1,379.40 including 21% VAT, with KvK number, VAT number, IBAN and a QR code to pay.
factuur-2026-0042.xml
<!-- Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 · NLCIUS -->
<Invoice>
  <cbc:ID>2026-0042</cbc:ID>
  <cbc:IssueDate>2026-10-12</cbc:IssueDate>
  <cac:PartyLegalEntity>
    <cbc:CompanyID>12345678</cbc:CompanyID>
  </cac:PartyLegalEntity>
  <cac:LegalMonetaryTotal>
    <cbc:PayableAmount>1379.40</cbc:PayableAmount>
  </cac:LegalMonetaryTotal>
</Invoice>
The same invoice twice: as a PDF to read, and as a UBL file that software reads in directly.
UBL
Universal Business Language: an XML format for business documents such as invoices and credit notes. This is the file we create.
Peppol
A European network for exchanging e-invoices securely between businesses, and a set of rules (Peppol BIS Billing 3.0) for what those invoices look like.
NLCIUS
The Dutch extension of the European standard, with extra rules such as your KvK number as identifier. Our UBL complies with it.
EN 16931
The European standard for e-invoices. Peppol BIS 3.0 and NLCIUS are based on it.

Fair is fair

What EenFactuurMaken.nl does

Honestly: what we do, and what we don't (yet).

What we do

  • A UBL file following Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 and NLCIUS with every invoice and credit note
  • The UBL file attached to your invoice email automatically
  • Separate downloads, even on Free, and access through the API
  • Checks on the fields Peppol and NLCIUS require, such as KvK number, addresses and payment details
  • The correct VAT category for reverse charge, intra-EU, export, KOR and exemptions

What we don't do (yet)

  • Send over the Peppol network itself. You can upload the UBL file to your customer's portal or your bookkeeping software.
  • Receive e-invoices. Purchase invoices belong in your bookkeeping, not in an invoicing tool.

On the calendar

What's coming?

E-invoicing is becoming the norm in Europe. This is where things stand in October 2026.

  1. Already

    Dutch central government

    Invoicing the Dutch central government? Then an e-invoice is mandatory, usually via Peppol.

  2. 1 January 2026

    Belgium

    Belgian businesses must send each other e-invoices via Peppol. So Belgian customers ask for them more and more.

  3. 1 July 2030

    Europe (ViDA)

    E-invoicing and digital reporting become mandatory for business supplies between EU countries.

  4. From 2030 (planned)

    The Netherlands

    The Dutch government plans to make e-invoicing mandatory for domestic business invoices too. There's no law yet.

This is general information, not tax advice. Plans and dates may still change.

Still wondering?

E-invoicing questions

Is a PDF invoice still valid?

Yes. In the Netherlands you can still send PDF invoices, as long as your customer accepts electronic invoices. Only the central government already requires an e-invoice.

Do I need to do anything to get a UBL file?

No. As soon as you issue an invoice, the UBL file exists. Do make sure your business details are complete, such as your KvK number and address.

My customer is in Belgium. Now what?

Belgian businesses receive e-invoices via Peppol. EenFactuurMaken.nl creates the right UBL file but doesn't send over Peppol itself yet. Many customers accept the UBL by email or through their own portal.

Can my bookkeeping software import the UBL file?

Most Dutch bookkeeping packages import UBL invoices. You can also deliver the files through the ZIP export or the API.

Does it work for credit notes too?

Yes. A credit note becomes a UBL CreditNote that references the original invoice, as the Dutch rules require.
