# PDF and e-invoice (UBL)

Download the PDF and the e-invoice (UBL 2.1, Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 / NLCIUS) of your invoices. File names, languages and when an e-invoice isn't possible.

Every invoice comes as a PDF for people and an **e-invoice** (UBL) for accounting software.

## PDF

- In the editor you see the PDF as you type. A draft has a "DRAFT" watermark and is called `concept-….pdf`.
- Download a finalised invoice via **Download PDF**. It's called `factuur-2026-0001.pdf`, a credit note `creditnota-C2026-0001.pdf`.
- The PDF has the [layout](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/layouts) you had when you finalised it. If you change your house style later, the PDF of a finalised invoice doesn't change.
- The language follows the invoice language: Dutch, English, German or French.

## E-invoice (UBL)

An e-invoice is an XML file that accounting software (such as Moneybird, Exact, Twinfield, e-Boekhouden or Snelstart) reads without retyping. EenFactuurMaken.nl produces **UBL 2.1** following **Peppol BIS Billing 3.0** with the Dutch rules (**NLCIUS**). A credit note becomes a UBL _CreditNote_.

- Download it via **Download UBL (Peppol)**. The file is called `invoice-2026-0001.xml`.
- Only finalised invoices have a UBL. For a draft you get `invoice_not_issued`.
- The VAT treatment is encoded correctly, with the right VAT category: S (standard), AE (reverse charge), K (intra-EU goods), G (export of goods), O (outside the scope), E (exempt and KOR).

### When is there no UBL?

- **No KvK number.** If you're not registered in the Handelsregister, the Dutch Peppol profile isn't possible. You get `peppol_kvk_required`. The PDF works as usual. See [Business details](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/getting-started/business-details#not-in-handelsregister).
- **Customer without an electronic address.** When we email the invoice, we only attach the UBL if your customer has a Peppol ID, KvK number or EU VAT number. Individuals only get the PDF. You can always download it yourself.

### Peppol

Peppol is the European network for e-invoices. EenFactuurMaken.nl creates files in the Peppol format, but doesn't send them over the Peppol network itself. Does your customer want to receive invoices via Peppol? Then upload the UBL to their accounting software or Peppol provider. Enter your own Peppol ID in your [business details](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/getting-started/business-details) and your customer's on the [customer](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/customers).

## PDF with embedded UBL

The PDF your customer downloads from the [online invoice](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/invoices/online-invoice) has the UBL embedded. That gives them one file for people and machines. Through the API you request it with `GET /api/v1/invoices/{id}/pdf?embedUbl=1`, and a UBL with the PDF inside with `GET /api/v1/invoices/{id}/ubl?embedPdf=1`.

## Downloading and retention

On the Free plan we keep your invoices for 60 days. So download them. An invoice you downloaded (PDF or UBL) or exported in a ZIP is remembered as downloaded. See [Storage and retention](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/retention) and [Export (ZIP)](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/export).
