# Currencies and exchange rates

Invoicing in dollars, pounds or another currency. How EenFactuurMaken.nl fetches the ECB rate, when to enter a rate yourself and why the VAT must also be shown in euros.

You can invoice in any currency with a three-letter code, such as USD, GBP or CHF. Choose the currency in the editor under **Currency**. Your default currency is set under **Settings → Invoices & numbering**.

## VAT in euros

If your invoice charges VAT in another currency, the VAT amount must **also** be shown in euros. For that you need an **exchange rate**: how many euros 1 unit of the currency is worth. For example 1 USD = 0.92 EUR.

Without a rate you can't finalise such an invoice (`vatInEurRequired`). Invoices without VAT (like export, EU customer or the KOR) don't need a rate.

## The ECB rate

- In the editor, click **Fetch ECB rate**. We fetch the European Central Bank reference rate for the invoice date.
- If the ECB published no rate that day (weekend or holiday), we take the last rate before it, up to 10 days back.
- If you didn't enter a rate, we fetch it automatically when you **finalise**.
- Below the totals the invoice then shows, for example, "VAT in EUR: €193.20 (1 USD = 0.92 EUR, ECB 2026-03-31)".

## Entering a rate yourself

Using a different rate, for example your bank's? Enter it yourself. The invoice then only shows the rate, without source and date. If the ECB doesn't know your currency, or the ECB can't be reached, EenFactuurMaken.nl also asks you to enter the rate yourself.

If the rate's date is more than 7 days away from the invoice date, you get a warning (`exchangeRateDateMismatch`).

## What happens with the rate?

- The rate is fixed on the invoice once you finalise it.
- Your [VAT overview](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/vat/vat-return) and revenue figures convert to euros with that rate.
- An invoice in a foreign currency with VAT but without a rate is left out of your VAT overview.
- The payment QR code only works for invoices in euros.
- When you [duplicate](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/invoices/copy-cancel-delete#duplicate) an invoice, the rate isn't copied: the new invoice gets a rate for its own date.

Through the API you get a rate with `GET /api/v1/exchange-rate?currency=USD&date=2026-03-31`. See the [endpoint reference](https://eenfactuurmaken.nl/en/docs/api/reference).
